Day 3: Thu 3 Sep - Istanbul

Despite being very tired when I went to sleep last night, I was still jet-lagged and was awake about 3am. Did a bit of reading, had a few snoozes then decided to get up. I collected Jane on the way to the dining room for breakfast and then met up with Ahmet just before lunch. Ahmet showed us around the hotel/Mess and explained how the dining room worked (which we had already figured out at breakfast) – help yourself and proceed to the check-out, pay, then eat. Simple and ridiculously cheap.

Met up with Susan and Richard, Annie, Guido, and Magda and perhaps a few others. Had lunch at a local restaurant. Also found a supermarket nearby where I was able to buy some coffee and coffee creamer and other essentials. I had brought with me the heating element I bought on my way to Brazil which came in very handy as there was no jug in the room. I was able to boil water in my coffee mug and my room was the focal point in the mornings before breakfast.

Spent the afternoon catching up with everyone and then getting things ready for the Congress and then joined Jane for the Council dinner which was a cruise on the Bosphorous at night – quite speccy. It was a good introduction to FIP Council members.
