I went for a short walk after breakfast
just to shake out the cobwebs and become more familiar with where we were, etc.
Spent the rest of the morning catching up with different people.
The Congress began for real with the
Opening Ceremony being held on at 1400h in the Istanbul Convention and
Exhibition Centre, which was for those staying at the Hilton or the Harbiye
Orduevi, just a short walk away. The speeches were interesting, with the
entertainment spectacular. The Sharman Dance performance was almost military
like with its precision drumming and dancing. The Welcome Reception was held
directly after the Opening Ceremony, which was a change from previous years,
when it has been held on a different night. The Welcome Reception was also held
at the conference venue, and those that found their way to the venue had a
jolly good time. Unfortunately, the party had to be cut short, as we all had to
retreat to our respective hotels to change into neat casual clothes for the
MEPS Meet and Greet.
The MEPS Meet ‘n’ Greet was held at the
Sarıyer Officers’ Club. So, after a quick change for those who were in uniform,
it was onto a big green military bus complete with armed guard for the 75
minutes (it took a little longer than anticipated due to traffic) ride to the
Officers’ Club. This Club is situated right on the banks of the Bosphorus with
a stunning view, and you have to wonder how many officers have fallen out the
door after a few too many Raki, or Efes?
